Top 10 HR Interview Questions (With Sample Answers)
Question 1: “Tell me about yourself” / “अपने बारे में बताएं”
Ideal Answer Structure (P-A-S):
P – Present: Currently you are working as [Role] at [Company] with experience of [X years]
A – Academic/Basics: Your education and how you entered this field
S – Skills & Aspiration: Key skills and why you’re excited about this opportunity
Example Answer:
“मैं पिछले 3 सालों से XYZ कंपनी में Software Engineer के तौर पर काम कर रहा हूं, जहां मैं Python और AWS पर काम करता हूं। मैंने Computer Science में B.Tech किया है। इस दौरान मैंने scalable systems बनाए हैं और team collaboration में expertise हासिल की है। अब मैं अपना career एक बड़ी संस्था में ले जाना चाहता हूं जहां मैं अपनी skills का सही use कर सकूं।”
Tip: Your answer should not exceed 60 seconds.
Question 2: “What are your strengths?”
Don’t say: “I’m a hard worker, I’m punctual…”
Smart Approach:
- One technical strength + One soft skill
- Support with a real-life example
Example Answer:
“My biggest strength is problem-solving under pressure. For instance, when our production server crashed during a client demo, I quickly identified the issue and fixed it within 30 minutes using my knowledge of AWS and debugging. Secondly, I have strong communication skills which help me bridge the gap between technical and non-technical teams.”
Question 3: “What are your weaknesses?”
Strategy:
- Choose a real weakness (but not a core skill for this job)
- Show how you’re overcoming it
Example Answer:
“Earlier, I used to struggle with public speaking. I realized it was affecting my team presentations. So I joined Toastmasters and started giving 5-minute talks. Now I’m much more comfortable, though I still practice. I’m also taking an online course on effective communication.”
❌ Avoid: “I work too hard” या “I’m a perfectionist”
Question 4: “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”
Mistake: “I want to be CEO” (unrealistic) या “I don’t know” (shows no planning).
Correct Answer:
- Align with company’s growth path
- Show ambition but be realistic
- Include skills you want to develop
Example Answer:
“In 5 years, I see myself as a senior technical lead who can mentor juniors and contribute to strategic decisions. I want to master my current stack and then explore cloud architecture. If the company offers opportunities, I’d love to take on more responsibilities over time.”
Question 5: “Why do you want to join our company?”
Bad answer: “Because you’re hiring” या “Salary is good.”
Good Answer Structure:
- Knowledge about the company (recent project, product, culture)
- How your skills match their needs
- How this role fits your career goal
Example Answer:
“I’ve been following your company’s work in AI-driven healthcare solutions and I’m impressed. My background in machine learning and Python fits perfectly with your current team’s needs. Also, your value of ‘innovation with impact’ resonates with me. I believe I can contribute meaningfully here.”
Question 6: “Why did you leave your previous job?”
Don’t: Badmouth your ex-employer या complain.
Good answers:
- Career growth opportunity
- Moving to a different domain
- Relocation
- Company’s vision mismatch (with respect)
Example Answer:
“My previous company was great, but after 3 years I felt I had outgrown the role. I wanted to work on larger-scale projects and improve my skills in cloud computing. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible there. So I decided to explore opportunities where I can grow further.”
Question 7: “Why is there a gap in your resume?”
Honesty is best. Don’t lie, but present it positively.
Possible reasons & answers:
- Up-skilling: “I took a break to complete my AWS certification and learn Docker.”
- Health/Personal: “I had a medical situation that required attention, but it’s fully resolved now.”
- Pandemic: “Due to COVID-19, the layoff happened, but I used that time to freelance and learn new skills.”
Question 8: “What are your salary expectations?”
Tricky question. Don’t give a number first if possible.
Strategy:
- Turn it around: “I’d like to know the budget for this role first.”
- Or give a range based on market research
- Have a minimum figure in mind
Example Answer:
“Based on my experience and market research, I’m looking for a package in the range of 12-15 LPA. However, I’m open to discussing it further considering the overall benefits and growth opportunities here.”
Tip: Use Glassdoor, AmbitionBox to know your worth.
Question 9: “How do you handle stress or pressure?”
Example Answer:
“I handle stress by breaking tasks into smaller parts. For example, when we had a tight deadline for product launch, I created a priority list and delegated tasks to team members. I also take short breaks to recharge. This approach helps me stay calm and focused.”
Add example – concrete incidents work best.
Question 10: “Do you have any questions for us?”
NEVER say no. It shows lack of interest.
Good questions to ask:
- “What does a typical day look like in this role?”
- “What are the biggest challenges the team is facing right now?”
- “How does the company support employee development?”
- “Can you tell me about the company culture?”
Avoid asking:
- Salary/benefits (too early)
- Lunch timings, holidays
- “When will I get promoted?”
